Temple to Shakespeare, Hampton, Middlesex

David Garrick (1717-1779) actor, dramatist and one of the greatest actors to appear on the English stage, decided in 1755 to build a temple on his riverside lawn, to celebrate the genius of William Shakespeare. Just over the road from Garrick's Villa in Hampton, the small octagonal brick building with its portico, is an integral part of its 18th century pleasure garden. The Temple is open to the public and within it, is a full-size replica statue of Shakespeare by the sculptor Roubiliac along side a display which celebrates David Garrick's acting career and private life in Hampton.
